Your will   is written to help your family organise the disposal of your estate when you’ve snuffed it. Whilst yours may be simple, here are a few unusual ones.

Will’s The Last Laugh
It makes sense to make a will. The majority of us know that, but actually doing it seems such a chore.  How much consideration went in these “wills with a difference”?

Even the legendary conjurer and escapologist, Harry Houdini, couldn’t trick death. Having perished from a ruptured appendix, one of his biggest surprises came with the will reading. His magic supplys went to his former partner Theodore, who was in addition his brother. His conjuring skills didn’t work on the next section – his bountiful array of scrolls on magic and the occult. He left these to the American Society for Psychical Research, but only on the requirement that the research officer J Malcolm Bird, who also was the editor of their journal, stood down. They declined the offer the compilation was given to the Library of Congress.

The performing rabbits that he utilised in his tricks left their hats and were divided around the children of friends. Continuing the wierd style, his left his spouse 10 words, which were a secret code, with the pledge that he would employ these words to reach her from the afterlife. Every year for 10 years, following his death, she reliably held séances, but Harry never made contact.

Kozmic Blues and rock singer Janis Lyn Joplin had a brief but notable career. She made many rock anthems and four albums, including “To Love Somebody” and “Me and Bobby McGee”. After years of drug addiction, she died from an overdose, aged twenty seven. Two days before her demise in 1970 her will      the sum of 2,500 dollars to sponsor an all night wake at her favourite bar so that her mates could “get blasted after I’m gone.” It must have been some celebration – that was an appreciable amount of money back in 1970.

We’ve all read about people that, randomly, leave all their money to the dogs’ home, much to the anger of their family. Many family rows begin when a will is read. As long as the person who made the will is of sound mind and not under duress, there is often nothing that can be done to object to such a decision.

Eccentricities aside, if you die without leaving a will, those who you would want to inherit wont always be the ones that do so. You might have a partner of many years, but if you’re not married or in a legal partnership, he or she won’t receive your money, in spite of your designs and affirmations. This can be upsetting when it’s not clearly understood and can result in devastating fiscal consequences.

The up to date method to get your will started is to go online and find a free wills      . However basic your wishes are, it’s best to get the professionals to write it for you and you can be confident that you’re leaving things exactly how you would want.
